Since the last blog last year, I reached 90 videos on www.YouTube.com/jgyoungmd, got juried into art shows at Open Studios, Core Art Gallery "Wordplay" show,the Louisville National Fine Arts Show and have had two one man shows at Studio Two Gallery at Rembrandt Yard. I have been more interested in new media art combining poetry, music, painting, graphics, photography into experimental video. It is wonderful being retired from psychiatry and into a new career as a full-time multi-media artist.

Freud saw Leonardo da Vinci as a repressed homosexual; Jung develops the idea of the the animus [the male side of woman] and the anima [the female side of man] which may be seen in the complex personalities of Leonardo, Mona Lisa, Mr. Lisa, and man/woman-kind. What was the Mona Lisa thinking? We are truly strangers to ourselves.

Sisyphus Disjunct

This existential piece is based upon the Greek myth about Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a rock up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The music is a keyboard improvisation.

Negotiating Rapture

You may be familiar with Martin Buber’s “I and Thou.” Though I am not a religious person, what he says rings true to me. He says we experience the transcendent through the I-Thou relationship. Most understand the Thou as being another person, but the Thou can be a stone, a tree or perhaps a film. “The extended lines of relation meet in the eternal Thou. Every particular Thou is a glimpse of the eternal Thou.” I believe that we can negotiate rapture in our I-Thou relationship with films, paintings, music as well as other persons.

I-It is the other mode of being. I-It does not know relationship; it is controlling, experiencing, i.e. knowing the other cognitively to have certain properties.

Negotiating rapture can be a tricky thing. It is a matter of being willing rather than willing, being captivated rather than capturing. It is treating the other as an end not a means to some other end. The negotiating then is putting ourselves in a receptive space, to be with, rather than objectifying, no matter how loving or sincere we may be.

But that is where I have trouble with academia and also with medicine. I would prefer to be in relation, captivated, enraptured, but we have to move to the I-It to negotiate life. There is the rub.

Seen from the 37th floor where Lake Michigan meets the river, this video poem is based upon the poetry of Carl Sandburg's "Chicago" and the works of Jeanne-Claude Christo. In this muitimedia video the music preceded the video, then the poems. After creating the video I remembered a poem, Sublime, I wrote when I asked a patient how she was feeling which reminded me of the Basho poem

This digital re-mix might be called “The Creative Adventure” meets “I Ching - the Book of Changes.” I took original paintings, collages and graphic images from my two-hour video, The Creative Adventure, and sliced and spliced them into a video montage. I used custom created filters, accidental juxtapositions and other chance elements in this composition. As a semi-abstract video artist, I began with the whole and worked towards the details, even with the music. This was not a linear process-- what was at the beginning ended up in the end or somewhere in the middle.

I find the use of chance in the digital re-mix puts things together in ways I had not anticipated, but I believe the aesthetic dimension is choosing what to keep and what to discard. As Robert Rauschenberg said, “The drips maybe accidental, but I choose which ones to keep.”

The "Adventures in Creativity Multimedia Magazine" E-zine will be replaced by this blog.

Before I discovered the blog, I was putting New Projects on a separate webpage. You might check out what was current the summer of 2006; but the blog formate seems more appropriate now for more rapidly changing material.

The latest offering is Colorblind. This video based upon my poem, “Colorblind,” takes video art to a higher level. Created with customized computer filters, novel flowing arrangements of flower shapes, with music improvised with soft-synths, this psychological journey will fascinate you. (20 min.)

Installation at Boulder Creek

This new video short, Installation at Boulder Creek, is greatly influenced by some of the classes I am auditing at the University of Colorado. I made it anticipating my Energy Show along with 2 other artists at the St. John’s Art Gallery this November and December.

Mark Amerika:
Time varies--it is speeded up, slowed down and reversed, as joggers and bikers run the creek path. Images are connected like the individuals followed in the movie, “Slacker”

Jim Palmer:
The Jungian influence of the shadow and the negative space as well as a subtle spinning rose mandala. Water the symbol of the collective unconscious. The male runner moves toward his anima shadow. The heroic size of the images suggests the hero’s quest. But you can’t help ignore the Freudian Cali Lily implication of sexuality.

Dan Boord:
Notice little things especially the pigeons in the last scene. The ABCA’ form of the music, the subtle repeats. The participation in the video of the artist, the dance of the installer.

Julie Murray:
The poetic association of the images.

Don Yannacito: Speeding up and slowing down the pace, repetition of images, poetic association of images. Extreme close-ups so the source is not easily identified.

Non-narrative Space-time.
